For our 2nd Semester of 3rd year we were given a brief to design a theatre opposite to our hostel.

Coming from the north of St. Kieran’s street the building elevation is pushed back into the site. You pass the glass wall looking down into the triple height foyer and then turn in towards the site, down the steps and into the building, into the large atrium. The pavement mirrors the large fins above. The entrance is split into 3 bays with one bay to the left taken up for vertical circulation. The other two being the main entrance to the building.

As you enter you continue straight towards the ticket office, turn left to the cloak room and then another left up the stairs to the bar and main theatre.

To the right down through the building you have the back of house. To the left side with W/C and backstage areas as well as another vertical circulation point.

The secondary performance space opened out to the public performance space and the office towards the river and disconnected to the building itself.

As you entry onto the first floor from the main foyer you come into a wraparound balcony around the triple height atrium. You can split evenly left and right and around the main theatre to get to your seat. The bar faces out onto the atrium space, the main area for socializing whilst waiting for the performance to commence. Above the secondary performance the wrap around balcony continues to and a door connects the office management area to the entire building. The meeting room is located on this floor and faces out towards the public square. This is the starting point for management to showcase the theatre to potential clients, starting with the secondary performance space and moving out towards the main space and foyer.
